One of the MOST important aspects of printing is the preparation of the artwork for printing. Below you will find a list of things to keep in mind. This list is by no means complete as many questions should be answered by your graphic designer. However, this list will give you a set of general guidelines to use when submitting your files for printing.

Catalog File(s) Preparation

For best results please follow our guidelines.

FILE FORMAT: We accept the following file formats TIF, TIFF, JPG, EPS, PNG, AI, PSD, and PDF.

FILE SIZE: The maximum file size acceptable for upload is 30MB (megabytes) per file.

RESOLUTION: All file formats must be a minimum of 300 dpi (dot per inch) in resolution.Images designed for the web are NOT PRINT QUALITY! Web images are designed at what is called low resolution (72 dpi). Print images need to be created at 300 dpi or there will be a substantial drop in the image quality.

Make sure that your print files are high resolution. Below we show an example of what would happen if you were to use a low resolution (72dpi) file for print. Notice the pixelation and lack of detail in the image

300dpi files are ideal for printing high quality product. Always start your design with high resolution imagery. The end result will be a much cleaner print product.

COLOR MODE: All color artwork and/or images must be provided in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color mode. All black & white artwork and/or images must be converted to grayscale color mode before submission.

When files are submitted in RGB mode and converted to CMYK, there can be a significant shift in color especially Greens, Blues & Reds. Make sure that your colors are print specific. Below are two images that show the amount of color shift that can occur if your print files are submitted in the wrong color space.

All files submitted for print must be converted to CMYK before submission. Files not in the CMYK colorspace will be returned for conversion.

BLEED: Please build your press-ready digital files by adding .125" OR .25" to the total dimensions. For example, a business card when finished will be 2"x3.5". When starting your business card design however, you must start the design at 2.125"x3.625" OR 2.25"X3.75". See the diagram below or our FAQs page for more information on this subject.

The image below is an example of incorrect artwork setup. Notice how the information (Name, Phone Numbers & Logo all cross the bleed and cut area. Any important information and/or artwork in these areas will be cut off.

The image below is an example of correct artwork setup. Notice how all information (Name, Phone Numbers, Email Address & Logo) are all within the safe area. All important information and/or artwork in the safe area will not be cut off.

CROP MARKS: Unequivocally, under no circumstances should crop marks be added to your print ready files unless instructed to do so by one of our staff members

FONTS: a. Fonts must be embedded in PDF files.
b. Fonts must be outlined or converted to paths or curves in EPS files.
c. Some fonts have copyright restrictions and will not embed in PDF Files.
d. Quark Express: Fonts and images must be included with all files submitted. (Mac only)

SAFE ZONE: All critical elements (text, images, logos, etc.) must be kept at least 0.125" away from the edge. Anything left close to edge may be cut off during trim process.
